Star Wheel Anchor Meditation

Meet Shōjin Franz Manfredi

Shōjin Franz Manfredi’s enduring interest in the spiritual traditions of India, Tibet, and Southeast Asia began as a young child. At the age of eight, he began his formal study and practice of Hindu meditation and philosophy. He explored this commitment in adulthood through three pilgrimages to India, where he received various tantric empowerments and instructions in the Dakshina Kali and Barsana/ Radhakunda Vaishnava traditions.

This lifelong pursuit of global wisdom and love for percussion was naturally complemented by his academic path: he pursued and completed a Bachelor of Arts in the World Music program at the California Institute of the Arts in 2004.

In 2013, Shōjin began an independent study of Early Buddhism focusing on the original teachings of the Buddha presented in the Sutta Pitaka. Shōjin launched his teaching career at Long Beach Meditation in 2015, following an invitation from its founder. Driven by a desire to share the transformative power of the Buddha’s teachings, he continues in that role today. He went on to establish Star Wheel Anchor Meditation in 2018. This organization serves as a centralized home for Shōjin, providing practitioners with new ways to engage with the Dharma. He also frequently serves as a guest teacher at InsightLA and upon invitation at other area meditation centers.

Traditions

Shōjin is a teacher with extensive experience across multiple Buddhist traditions. In 2026, he formally entered the Soto Zen lineage by receiving Jukai from Jokai Blackwell Roshi, a rite of passage marking his official entry into an unbroken line tracing its beginnings to the Buddha.

Under Jokai Roshi’s expert guidance, Shōjin continues to deepen his formal study of the Zen and Chan canons and Koans. Parallel to his Zen practice, he studies Dzogchen under James Low. By integrating these diverse lineages, Shōjin remains committed to a life of compassion and the goal of awakening for the benefit of all beings.

Continually inspired by the incredible depth and diverse beauty of all of Buddhism, Shōjin has a passion for sharing the Buddha’s teachings that is rooted in the profound revolution they have created in his own life. He lives in the beautiful city of Long Beach, CA, with his beloved family.

The Wheel

The eight-spoked Wheel represents the Dharma, or the Buddha’s teachings. For centuries, a ship’s wheel has steered a vessel’s journey, and here it symbolizes the Eightfold Path-the very teachings that guide one toward a flourishing life and complete awakening.

The Anchor

The Anchor represents the importance of being grounded in the Sangha, or spiritual community.

Just as an anchor provides stability, community offers a crucial support system for a flourishing life, reminding us that we discover our truest selves not in isolation, but in connection with others.
